HAIRY SITUATIONS: GOING GRAY

Posted by STETSON CREATIVE

Contrary to popular belief, gray hair isn't caused by stress, lack of sleep, or other environmental factors.  Gray hair is caused when oxidation kills off the cells in your hair follicles that create pigment, and is highly genetic.  This means that all of the hype about the power of antioxidants is true, so adding those super-fruits and antioxidant supplements really will help to ward off any premature graying of the hair.  If it's already too late for that, you can  take steps to color your hair to cover grays.

There are several types of color available:

Progressive coloring. The “Grecian Formula” approach uses lead acetate, which darkens with exposure to air. Hair is colored gradually, so you can stop when you’ve achieved the effect you want.  This is often found in men's hair color products for beards.

Direct dyes. Often called demi-permanent, these dyes are made of colored molecules that coat hair, these are quick and easy to apply. The drawback: They typically wash away after only 6 to 10 shampoos. On the plus side, that means you don’t have to worry about gray roots. The dye is gone before they can show up.

Semi-permanent color. Also called tone on tone, this uses peroxide to allow color molecules to enter the hair shaft, thus creating a more permanent color. These products usually take 5 to 15 minutes to apply and last about twice as long as direct dyes.

Regular permanent color. This uses both peroxide and ammonia, which can lighten the natural pigment of hair, allowing men to select shades lighter than their original hair color. These products are also used to create highlights. The drawback: if you don’t like the color, you’re stuck with it until hair grows out — or you dye it over again, which can be tricky.

The first three types call all be done at home to cover mild to moderate gray without much hassle with several products available to you at your local drugstore.  Permanent color is ideal for large areas of gray and if you are going to maintain your gray coverage.  This type of hair color is best done by a professional at a salon.  Though this is also the most costly method, you will most likely get your desired results here.

HAIRY SITUATIONS: HAIR LOSS

Posted by STETSON CREATIVE

Male Pattern Baldness is a genetic condition in which hormone levels affect hair production on the scalp and is the cause of 95% of those with hair loss. In men with baldness, testosterone is converted to DHT by Alpha-5 Reductase, an enzyme in the body, and DHT slows down hair production, resulting in shorter hair, and in some cases can actually halt hair production all together. There are many treatments available for male pattern baldness though, and the type of treatment depends on how severe your hair loss is, and if you are trying to regrow hair or just keep existing hair.
Types of Male Pattern Baldness

1. FINASTERIDE (PROPECIA) Orginally developed to treat enlarged an prostate, finasteride is an Alpha-5 Reductase inhibitor, therefor blocking the production of DHT and allowing hair to grow normally.  This became the first drug in history which was effective on the majority of men using it, and in 1997, a 1mg dosage became one of the first FDA approved treatment for hair loss.

Available by Perscription Only

2. MINOXIDIL (ROGAINE) Originally used for years to treat high blood pressure, subjects noticed odd hair growth patterns such as on their hands and cheeks.  Scientists thought if the pill form was changed and applied topically, hair growth could be controlled.  While this treatment is not recommended by experts as the main method of treating hair loss, as it does not block alpha-5 reductase, but used in conjunction with Propecia, it can be an effective second treatment.

$60 - Drugstores Nationwide

4. SURGICAL HAIR TRANSPLANTS..
Surgical hair transplants can only be done by a doctor in a procedure in which DHT resistant follicles are transplanted from the back of the head to the area of hair loss.  This is an effective, yet most expensive (and most permanent) method of treating hair loss.

HAIRY SITUATIONS: HAIR REMOVAL

Posted by STETSON CREATIVE

Well we all know that shaving and waxing are great at-home options for hair removal, each with their benefits and consequences.  Shaving is obviously the most cost-effective and painless method of hair removal, but also lasts the least amount of time.  Let's explore some other options you may want to explore as Spring approaches and bathing suit season creeps up on us.

WAXING.  A process by which hot wax is spread over the desired removal area with a paper or fabric pressed into the wax.  When the wax is cooled, the paper is swiftly pulled away from the skin, taking the hair with it.  Unfortunately traditional waxing methods can be very messy and somewhat painful if not done by a professional.  The benefit to waxing, however, is that over time, it actually reduces the amount of hair and coarseness, allowing more and more time to pass between treatments.  At-home kits are available, but I wouldn't recommend them for men's hair removal.  Unless you are very experienced, or willing to make a major error, leave the waxing to the professionals.

CHEMICAL.  This became an at-home trend very quickly with products like Nair, Nads, and Veet released over the last 20 years, with their effectiveness constantly under debate.  The process is all too convenience, and results tend to not be consistent.  SURGI CARE makes a fairly good, inexpensive 3-step cream system which is great for hair removal on the arms and legs.  If you have very sensitive skin, I would shy away from this method.

$10 - Ulta Beauty www.ulta.com

LASER.  This method involves aiming tiny pulses of light into the follicle to stop hair growth.  This is the newest technology, and is generally the most expensive AND the most permanent.  At-home systems are available, but are extremely expensive and time consuming.  Most high-end spas are now offering laser treatments as part of their menu of services.

There are other forms of hair removal including threading (usually reserved for eyebrows) and electrolysis (usually reserved for unwanted facial hair on women), but they aren't viable options for men.  My advice: Waxing is a great option as far as afford ability, length of time it takes for regrowth, and treatment time for the entire body, but for best results in your private areas, stick to the razor for its speed and ease of use!

HAIRY SITUATIONS: INGROWN HAIRS

Posted by STETSON CREATIVE

Whether you are just shaving your face or your entire body, chances are at one time or another, you have experienced the nasty affects of an ingrown hair.  Unattractive, and often painful, ingrown hairs are tricky to get rid of....but there are steps you can take to prevent them in the first place!

Ingrown hairs are caused by skin cells forming over the follicle after the hair has been shaved, causing the hair to grow back under the skin, trapping the hair and other bacteria under the surface of the skin, resulting in painful red bumps.  The only cure for an ingrown hair is to fish it out with a surgical blade or sharp pin.

You can reduce the occurrence of these pesky blemishes by taking a few steps during your shaving routine.

STEP 1:  EXFOLIATE before you shave with a coarse scrub (sugar or salt) or a loofah.  This sloughs away dead skin cells allowing for a smoother, more comfortable shave.

LEAF & RUSHER Rapid Resurface

$50 - Leaf & Rusher www.leafandrusher.com

STEP 2:  PREP with a shaving cream that uses calming ingredients such as aloe, chamomile, and licorice extracts.

KORRES Absinthe Shave Cream

$22 - Korres www.korres.com

STEP 3:  SHAVE using a high quality, sharp razor.  If you have especially coarse hair, or tend to get a lot of ingrown hairs, shave with the grain.  The resulting shave won't be silky smooth, but it will leave the edge of the hairs above the surface of the skin, preventing skin growth over the follicle.

STEP 4: TONE using an anti-bacterial toner including witch hazel and salicylic acid.  Apply to area with a cotton ball or cotton pad and allow to air dry.

MENSCIENCE Post-Shave Repair
This one is especially great because it sprays directly on the area.  No cotton required!

$28 - Menscience www.menscience.com

STEP 5: TREAT the area with a soothing aftershave balm, which will calm irritation and act as an anti-inflammatory for the follicles that have just been opened up.

WHISH BODY Flawless Ingrown Hair Serum

$22.50 Whish Body www.whishbody.com

You are going to want to repeat steps 4 and 5 twice a day for the next 3 days or so, to ensure that you are preventing skin growth over the hair follicles.  If you shave every day, then you are going to want to do steps 2-5 daily, and reserve exfoliating to 1-2 times per week.

FRAGRANCE: VALENTINES GIFTS FOR HIM AND HER!

Posted by STETSON CREATIVE

Its creeping up faster than you think....that Hallmark holiday that most of us dread every year.. VALENTINE'S DAY! We all know that fragrances (along with chocolates and flowers) are among the most popular gifts for this holiday, so hopefully we can de-mystify finding the perfect fragrance for your special someone.

First of all, you are going to want to look at what you want this fragrance to say about your man (or woman).  Is this person easy-going and bright, dark and sophisticated, or down to earth and romantic? You also may want to consider sticking to a Spring/Summer fragrance for a Valentine's Day gift as these seasons are quickly approaching.  What I recommend, is knowing what their current fragrance is, doing some research on the scent story, and pick a fragrance in a similar range, but maybe with an updated appeal! The #1 rule of shopping for fragrance is make sure to GET A RECEIPT and KNOW THE RETURN POLICY in case your partner doesn't share your scent sentiment!

Well fortunately there are some great product out there just for you! You don't need a bathroom full of fancy products to look and feel great! If you have average skin (aside from the shaving and face care we previously discussed, you can get away with as few as two products, which are great!

Anti-Aging Tips for Men

Posted by STETSON CREATIVE

A good percentage of men have shown just as much interest in anti-aging regimens as women do, though few actually go through with it because the products may seem to girl-y.  Well gentlemen, you are going to have to get over that REAL QUICK, because unless you want your skin looking like a leather handbag, you should start  with an anti-aging complex immediately and follow these EASY steps (and don't worry, nothing too feminine!)

1. EXFOLIATE.  I can't stress this enough, exfoliation increases cell turnover, and removes dull, dead cells, to create a younger, fresher appearance of the skin.  Using a mild, fine abrasive scrub such as this one from MENSCIENCE is also a great way to achieve a smoother shave.  With Alpha Hydroxy and Salicylic Acid for anti-bacterial, and aloe vera to sooth, this is an excellent way to achieve soft, younger looking skin.

$29 - Menscience www.menscience.com

2.  MOISTURIZE! At least once, if not twice a day.  Moisture plumps up the skin an reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Using one with antioxidant power such at the ANTHONY Vitamin A Treatment will reduce lines as you sleep (Vitamin A is also known as RETINOL, a popular ingredient in feminine anti-aging creams). This moisturizer has a whopping 10% Vitamin A solution for maximum results.

$35 - Anthony Logistics for Men www.anthony.com

While that may be a great evening moisturizer, you will need a lighter one with sunscreen for daytime such as the JACK BLACK Double Duty Face Moisturizer, which has SPF 20 to protect your skin from further sun damage, as well as blue algae and sea parsley which are rich in vitamins a, c, and e (all have antioxidant power to reduce free radicals and help with anti-aging).

$26 - Jack Black www.getjackblack.com

3. EYE CREAM! Don't be afraid of it.  The soft skin around your eyes is one of the first to show signs of aging and the ultimate giveaway of your true age, so stop those fine line in their tracks with Tri-Aktiline Deep Wrinkle Filler by GOODSKIN LABS.  The trick with eye creams is to use them every day and night to reach full potential.  I like this one because you can see visible results immediately and then further results in 4-8 weeks, and its a great price!

$40 - Kohls www.kohls.com

Remember, Stay out of the SUN, QUIT SMOKING, and GET SLEEP to really see an improvement in your skin. Eat a diet high in OMEGA-3 and ANTIOXIDANTS and you WILL SEE RESULTS!!!!

Male Pattern Balding: Causes and Treatments

Posted by STETSON CREATIVE

HAIR LOSS DUE TO POOR NUTRITION, ILLNESS, STRESS, MEDICATION...
Often results in sudden, temporary hair loss and can be treated with a high protein diet and taking amino acid/fatty acid supplements.  There is also a brand new product (available October 2010) from RENE FURTERER called Vitalfan, which is specifically design for this type of hair loss.  It contains black currant to stimulate blood flow as well as vitamin e, biotin (b vitamin), and fatty / amino acids to help stimulate regrowth on the scalp.

HAIR LOSS DUE TO MALE PATTERN BALDNESS
Male Pattern Baldness is a genetic condition in which hormone levels affect hair production on the scalp and is the cause of 95% of those with hair loss. 3. NON SURGICAL HAIR REPLACEMENT...
Mesh Fabric can provide a natural, undetectable hairline with a light, comfortable feel, but scalp oils will deteriorate the fabric quickly, and this more expensive treatment will need to be replaced frequently.

Polymers are much more durable than mesh fabric and also less expensive, though a natural hairline is not possible, and the material is very hot and heavy to wear.

Hair Pieces are often an inexpensive, effective way to conceal hair loss, with good quality ones being woven from exact matching human hair.

Remember, that only these treatments are recommended by the American Hair Loss Association, and anything else is usually a scam, so buyer beware! Also remember that the sooner you do something about hair loss, the easier it is to treat!
